Jennifer Mahfouz, PsyD

I am a licensed clinical psychologist, with specialized training in health and rehabilitation psychology. You might ask how I found this field and why I chose to pursue it. While completing my doctoral education at Nova Southeastern University, I connected with a wonderful mentor. His passion for life was infectious. He viewed every person as having inherent strengths and potential, even in the face of unthinkable challenges and tragedy. His views resonated with me and I knew this was the message I wanted to foster not just in my career, but in my life.

Thanks to this influential mentor, my journey towards developing a positive psychological approach to health and rehabilitation was born. This shaped all of my training experiences in a variety of inpatient and outpatient medical settings, culminating in a post-doctoral fellowship and full-time employment at Craig Hospital, a world renowned acute rehabilitation hospital, working with individuals with spinal cord injuries.

How do you cope, grieve, and begin to understand what life looks like after such a catastrophic injury? This is not an easy question to ask, nor is it an easy question to answer. I am passionate about establishing genuine and authentic relationships with individuals, in order to establish a foundation for navigating the seemingly unnavigable.

It was at this time that one thing became glaringly obvious to me, being discharged from the hospital and returning home does not provide all the answers, but often raises even more questions. Unfortunately, from my experience, the available mental health support and resources with this framework and expertise is strikingly limited. This realization motivated me to pivot. I developed my outpatient practice as a way to begin to fill this gap in patient care, from the transition between hospital and home.

You may be now saying to yourself, "I don't have a spinal cord injury, so can she even help me?" The answer to that question is "absolutely yes!" My training, experience, and expertise broadens beyond neurologic injuries and includes most chronic medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, pain, insomnia, cardiovascular disease, headaches, MS, etc.), injuries (orthopedic, neurologic), and/or disabilities (e.g., spinal cord injury, amputation, vision impairments, etc.). If you are unsure if this is you, please do not hesitate to contact my office to schedule a free 15 minute consultation!
